From Typewriter to Twitter

At a time when many businesses are backing down to the economic pressures, our client, Le Petit Spa is investing in the future and new media.

At a recent presentation for Retail BC’s Re-Tales series Nancy Mudford, Owner of Le Petit Spa and www.spaboutique.ca shared her success story with other retailers.  Nancy stated that despite the economic down turn the spa has seen a 4% growth in revenue since last year. She encouraged local businesses to keep investing in their business and see this as a time of opportunity. She advised businesses to embrace new technology and social media as another way to connect with clients and build community. Nancy’s online business saw an increase in revenues of over $17,000 in one month due to adopting new social media practices and strategic online marketing efforts.

Encouraged by these results Nancy has invested in more online marketing for Le Petit Spa This month she launched the redesigned Le Petit Spa website. Not just a pretty face this fresh look is fully optimized, will make it easier for clients to find the services they want and introduces the convenience of online booking.  Le Petit Spa is also increasing the use of social media for the spa including Twitter and Facebook.

When asked about adopting social media Nancy replies, “I went to university with a typewriter. Anyone who tells me it’s too hard to engage in all this new social media, I have empathy for them, but they need to get on the bus! You have to learn, engage and change your habits because that’s where it’s all going.  New generations grew up with digital media and are learning so quickly.”

Ms Mudford continues to share what she has learnt with fellow entrepreneurs. She has been asked to join the Retail BC Technology Leadership Network. This committee will provide input and feedback to the association as they work toward building a more relevant website for retail entrepreneurs. Nancy has been featured by Telus in their Small Business Matters program, “Spa owner shares technology secrets for great service and growth” and she continues to teach Marketing, ecommerce and social media at BCIT.
